Principal Applestein and Assistant Principal Ruth welcome students back to school.

hello everybody my name is Greg applestein and I am the new principal of Windham Middle School I'd like to share a brief bio with you I taught English and video directions for 22 years of a Belfast area high school and was an assistant principal for three years at Ellsworth High School five years as an assistant principal in Scarborough at the high school and I just completed three years of being a prince Bonny Eagle super excited to be here and looking forward to meeting you all we're right here at the school I taught 19 years here teaching math and Science and then one year of math at Lake Region middle school and I'm super excited to be the assistant principal here and I want to give you an inside look at what the school looks like when we're getting it ready for student so come on in so when you first walk into the middle do you notice that we have a couple entrances down our long hallway the first entrance would be the administrator has offices entrance area and that's where parents might join us to meet for conversations or meetings that we may have it's also possible that a student may need to report to the office to have a conversation with the assistant principal in myself so this would be the entrance to the administrative offices in this long hallway I'll take a walk down the long hallway and show you the next entrance it is definitely a behind-the-scenes look as we continue to prepare to open school in a couple weeks the second entrance is the staff entrance that's where staff can coming to the main office get mail from their mailboxes pick up supplies packages etcetera if they need to speak with either Miss Ruth or myself they would certainly enter in the staff entrance area and then the third entrance again down this hole play would be the entrance excuse me right here to the clinic this door is shut off at the moment but students is need to see the nurse need to report to the clinic they would enter this door and they would have a seat in the waiting area to me the nurse all right come on let's keep going here at Windham Middle School we have four core values compassion and integrity respect and responsibility and when you come to school here you're going to be doing a lot of work with those I'm surrounding how we treat each other and how we make sure that we're safe here at school so look to your teachers do a lot of activities and those opening days with our core values and you will know all four of them I'm with him that first week of school so come on keep going we're just coming up from the ramp a star core values this is the guidance office and we're going to continue down the hallway and turn right to head to the library so as we come down the stairs to the lower-level our library is located to my right we're going to enter into the library and share some things with you about some of the Project based learning we're doing this year we are now the library again on the lower level of the 7th and 8th grade wing and we're standing at the circulation desk as is the case in most libraries that is your point of information we have a library in here that will assist you in finding books research materials is you will be spending a good deal of time in here as you embark on our project based learning initiative this year we're in year two of that work where all of your teachers are on your team and all the students on your team identify challenge maybe locally in the community problem-solving experience through the project-based learning this year and new feature of our schedule is that the applied Arts teachers will be what we call one team so each student will have five teachers to work with them on the project based learning those projects involve work across Math Science and English social studies and whatever applied arts teacher is on their team so be on the lookout for that as I said we do have a new schedule this year and as we have done in years past we will start the day in our ignite block and then students will move through their classes again the new feature is it applied Arts teachers will be on team so when teachers have their team meeting whether they're Co planning Co assessing taking a look at students work that $50 will become an integral part of that team as well now we're back upstairs our cafeteria and this is not what it looks like during the school year all of the tables and chairs will be back in once the floor is finished and this is where you will eat lunch every day I'm it's right after you enter the building so one of those places that we collect students when we have community meeting 10 different events because we can fit all 200 students in here for each grade level I'm after this we're going to head down the hallway and check out our gym this is our Jimmy Exhilarate gym upstairs and then the regular gymnasium downstairs now this is where you'll have PE class which is part of our Wellness plus offerings and some of you will get to have PE every other day depending on your Wellness plus choices I'm so it's an awesome space to get active and you have a good time here at the auxiliary gym at this end of the building you're in the what we would call the gym Lobby we're also at the back door which is an exit and entrance we have are sixth graders housed in a former school will head out there in a minute I'll we do want to give a special shout-out to all of the sixth graders who will be joining us this year really excited to have you here can't wait to work with all of you and in a minute we'll head out to field Allen we're now in the field Allen building this is where all 6th grade classrooms are if you look down that hallway and there's also some other offerings here we have Spanish and health and our offer. building as well sixth graders will have to walk outside to access the cafeteria for lunch and any other classes if they might have included or behind the scenes tour of the school we are standing at parent drop-off this is the main entrance to the field Allen building where are sixth graders are housed we're also inviting you to join us the Monday night before school starts for our open house which will take place here at the school between 5:30 and 6. thank you for tuning in and we hope to see you soon
